Με την αρωγή της ιστορικής εθνογραφίας και της προφορικής ιστορίας, η παρούσα ανακοίνωση εξετάζει ένα επεισόδιο ενδοκοινοτικής βίας στα ταραγμένα τελευταία χρόνια της βρετανικής αποικιοκρατίας στην Κύπρο. Υπογραμμίζοντας τις αντιθέσεις εντός της αποικιακής εμπειρίας, η ομιλία ασκεί κριτική στην παρούσα αποαποικιοποιητική στροφή στην ανθρωπολογία κι εν γένει στις κοινωνικές επιστήμες, υπενθυμίζοντας την ανάγκη για συνεχή ιστορικοποίηση και ανάδειξη των γκρίζων ζωνών και αντιφάσεων στις ζωές των αποικιακών υποκειμένων.

Decolonise this!: On the Cypriot experience, and lessons thereof

The story of this paper is an insight in the low-intensity civil war between anticolonial EOKA nationalists on the one hand and communists with different views on anticolonialism on the other. In August 1958, a double killing of a woman and a child took place in a Mesaoria village by masked anticolonial guerrillas, in the midst of the Greek-Cypriot struggle against the British and the first skirmishes with Turkish-Cypriots. This was one of many inter-communal killings during the “liberation struggle” – snippets of violence against neither the British nor the T/C.

Following the repercussions and memories of this event for a small refugee community, this paper tackles the delicacies of decolonising theory. It does so through accounting for the empirical reality of the actual historical decolonisation processes and its grey areas. Critically visiting decolonising approaches, the paper stresses the need for constant historicisation and reflection on the persistence of ideology, and calls for attention to the contradictions of anticolonial struggles that bear legacies of post-colonial complexity and decolonised malaise. It thus aims to instill doubt in the current state of play of decolonising theory in “Greek studies".
