Ιστορία της συντήρησης της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς
Η Διεύθυνση Συντήρησης Αρχαίων και Νεωτέρων Μνημείων του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού σε συνεργασία με το Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο, διοργάνωσε Διεθνές Επιστημονικό Συνέδριο στις 9 και 10 Οκτωβρίου 2023 με τίτλο: "Ιστορία της συντήρησης της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς: από τα πρώτα επιστημονικά εργαστήρια στα παγκόσμια κέντρα συντήρησης".
Το Συνέδριο πραγματοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο των Ευρωπαϊκών Ημερών Συντήρησης της Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς 2023 και εντάχθηκε στη θεματική ενότητα «Αφιέρωμα σε έναν συντηρητή: αυτοί που διαμόρφωσαν τη Συντήρηση».
Πρόκειται για την υλοποίηση μιας πρωτότυπης ιδέας της Δρ. Γεωργιάννας Μωραΐτου, προϊσταμένης του Τμήματος Συντήρησης, Φυσικών - Χημικών Ερευνών & Αρχαιομετρίας του Εθνικού Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου και του Δρ. Uwe Peltz, συντηρητή στο Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation - National Museums in Berlin.
Η έναρξη του Συνεδρίου πραγματοποιήθηκε τη Δευτέρα 9 Οκτωβρίου στο Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο με το χαιρετισμό της Γενικής Διευθύντριας του, Άννας-Βασιλικής Καραπαναγιώτη, και την κεντρική ομιλία της Προϊσταμένης της Διεύθυνσης Συντήρησης Αρχαίων & Νεωτέρων Μνημείων, Μαρίας Μερτζάνη. Την επομένη 10 Οκτωβρίου διεξήχθη η κυρίως συνάντηση στο αμφιθέατρο «Δημήτριος Παντερμαλής» του Μουσείου της Ακρόπολης.
Στο Συνέδριο, που διεξήχθη στην Αγγλική γλώσσα, συμμετείχαν προσκεκλημένοι εισηγητές-εκπρόσωποι μουσείων, ινστιτούτων και πανεπιστημίων της Ελλάδας και του εξωτερικού. Παρουσιάστηκε η ιστορία των ακόλουθων φορέων: Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο, Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο, Le Louvre, The Metropolitan, Berlin Museums, National Museum of Denmark, Musei Vaticani, Harvard Fog Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Ιstambul, Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique, Instituto Centrale di Restauro, Grand Egyptian Museum.
Το Συνέδριο διαρθρώθηκε σε τέσσερα μέρη: Στο πρώτο μέρος παρουσιάστηκαν τα αποτελέσματα των πρόσφατων ερευνών σχετικά με την πορεία της επιστημονικής Συντήρησης στην Ελλάδα, έτσι όπως αυτή διαφαίνεται μέσα από τη μελέτη των ιστορικών πηγών. Το δεύτερο και το τρίτο μέρος περιλάμβαναν ομιλίες σχετικές με την εξέλιξη της Συντήρησης και τις δραστηριότητες των εργαστηρίων επιστημονικής συντήρησης σε διεθνές επίπεδο. Τέλος, στο τέταρτο μέρος της ημερίδας αναπτύχθηκαν ζητήματα που αφορούσαν τη θεωρία της Συντήρησης σε άμεσο συσχετισμό με τις τρέχουσες εξελίξεις στο πεδίο και με τα μάτια στο «μέλλον του παρελθόντος μας».
Πρόκειται για ένα επιστημονικό γεγονός που για πρώτη φορά διοργανώθηκε στην Ελλάδα με τη δημιουργική συμβολή έγκριτων επιστημόνων και φορέων, σε μια «γιορτή» για τη Συντήρηση της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς.
SCIENTIFIC EVENT
History of Cultural Heritage Conservation
The Directorate of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the National Archaeological Museum, organized an International Scientific Conference on October 9 and 10, 2023 titled: “History of Cultural Heritage Conservation: From the First Scientific Laboratories to the World Conservation Centres”.
The Conference was held in the context of the European Heritage Conservation Days 2023 and was part of the thematic section "Tribute to a conservator: those who shaped Conservation".
It is the implementation of an original idea of Dr. Georgianna Moraitou, head of the Department of Conservation, Physical -Chemical Research & Archaeometry of the National Archaeological Museum at Athens and Dr. Uwe Peltz, conservator at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation - National Museums in Berlin.
The opening of the Conference took place on Monday, October 9 at the National Archaeological Museum with the salutation of its Director General, Dr Anna-Vasiliki Karapanagiotis, and the keynote speech of the Head of the Directorate of Conservation of Ancient & Modern Monuments, Mrs Maria Mertzani.
The next day, October 10, the main Conference was held at the "Dimitrios Pandermalis" amphitheater of the Acropolis Museum. The Conference, conducted in English, was attended by invited lecturers-representatives of museums, institutes and universities in Greece and abroad. The institutions presented were: Athens National Archaeological Museum, Athens Byzantine and Christian Museum, Le Louvre, The Metropolitan, Berlin Museums, National Museum of Denmark, Musei Vaticani, Harvard Fog Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Istanbul Archaeological Museum, Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique, Instituto Centrale di Restauro, Grand Egyptian Museum.
The Conference was structured in four parts: In the first part, the results of recent research on the course of scientific Conservation in Greece, as seen through the study of historical sources, were presented. The second and third part included speeches related to the evolution of Conservation and the activities of scientific conservation laboratories at an international level. Finally, in the fourth part of the conference, issues related to Conservation theory were developed in direct correlation with current developments in the field and with eyes on the "future of our past".
It was a scientific event that was organized for the first time in Greece with the creative contribution of reputable scientists and institutions, in a "celebration" for the Conservation of cultural heritage.
Η Δρ. Hélène Dubois είναι συντηρήτρια έργων ζωγραφικής και ιστορικός τέχνης, ειδικευμένη στη μελέτη της ιστορίας των υλικών, της τεχνικής και της συντήρησης των έργων ζωγραφικής των Παλαιών Δασκάλων. Εκπαιδεύτηκε στο Université Libre de Bruxelles και στο Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge (UK). Εργάστηκε στο Doerner-Institut στο Μόναχο, στο Μουσείο J. Paul Getty στο Μαλιμπού, στα Βασιλικά Μουσεία Καλών Τεχνών στις Βρυξέλλες και στο Ινστιτούτο Συντήρησης του Limburg στο Μάαστριχτ, όπου δίδαξε τη συντήρηση Πινάκων των Παλαιών Δασκάλων. Υπηρετεί στο Βασιλικό Ινστιτούτο Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς στις Βρυξέλλες (KIK-IRPA) από το 2008, ηγείται του έργου συντήρησης του Adoration of the Mystic Lamb των αδελφών van Eyck από το 2016. Απέκτησε διδακτορικό από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Γάνδης το 2022 με μια διατριβή με τίτλο: «The Turbulent Material History of the Ghent Altarpiece. Μια ανάλυση που ενσωματώνει την τεχνική εξέταση και τις ιστορικές πηγές (1432-1894).
Dubois Hélène

Dr Hélène Dubois is a painting conservator and art historian, specialized in the study of the material history, the technique and the conservation of Old Masters paintings. She trained at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge (UK). She worked at the Doerner-Institut in Munich, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels and the Limburg Conservation Institute in Maastricht where she taught conservation of Old Masters Paintings. Attached to the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage in Brussels (KIK-IRPA) since 2008, she leads the conservation project of the brothers van Eyck’s Adoration of the Mystic Lamb since 2016. She obtained het PhD from Ghent University in 2022 with a thesis entitled: “The Turbulent Material History of the Ghent Altarpiece. An analysis integrating technical examination and historical sources (1432-1894)”.
Η Δρ. Francesca Bewer έχει M. Phil. σε ιστορικές μελέτες της Αναγέννησης από το Ινστιτούτο Warburg, Πανεπιστήμιο του Λονδίνου (1986), και διδακτορικό στην Αρχαιομεταλλουργία από το Ινστιτούτο Αρχαιολογίας, University College του Λονδίνου (1996). Η Bewer είναι ο συγγραφέας του A Laboratory for Art. Μουσείο Fogg του Χάρβαρντ και οι απαρχές της συντήρησης στην Αμερική, 1900–1950 (2010) και συνεκδότης του The Explicit Material: Inquiries on the Intersection of Curatorial and Conservation Cultures (2019). Dr Francesca Bewer has an M. Phil. in historical studies of the Renaissance from the Warburg Institute, University of London (1986), and a Ph. D. in Archaeometallurgy from the Institute of Archaeology, University College London (1996). She serves as liaison between the Division of Academic and Public Programs and the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies. She develops and heads the public and academic programs for the Materials Lab; directs the Summer Institute for Technical Studies in Art; assists with conservation-related interpretation in the museums; teaches; and undertakes art-technical research. An expert in the technical study of bronzes and on the history of conservation, she has published extensively on European bronze sculpture of the 16th through 18th centuries. Bewer is the author of A Laboratory for Art. Harvard’s Fogg Museum and the Emergence of Conservation in America, 1900–1950 (2010) and co-editor of The Explicit Material: Inquiries on the Intersection of Curatorial and Conservation Cultures (2019). She is a founding member of the Copper Alloy Sculpture Techniques and history: International interdisciplinary Group, (aka CAST: ING) and is co-author and co-editor of its Guidelines for the Technical Study of Bronzes (Getty Publications, forthcoming in Summer 2023). She was awarded the 2012 College Art Association/Heritage Preservation Award for Distinction in Scholarship and Conservation.

Abigail Hykin
Head of Objects Conservation, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
Abigail Hykin is the Robert P. and Carol T. Henderson Head of Objects Conservation at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (since 2020) where she oversees objects conservation within an encyclopedic collection of approximately 500,000 artworks from antiquity to the present day - including Egyptian, Nubian, and Classical art; world-renowned collections of Japanese and Chinese art; and American, European, and Contemporary sculpture and decorative arts.
Abby has been at the MFA since 2000, first as the lead objects conservator for the Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the MFA’s sister museum in Japan, preparing a wide range of exhibitions from across the MFA’s collection. Previously, she was Assistant Conservator of Decorative Arts & Sculpture at the J. Paul Getty Museum and completed advanced-level internships or fellowships at the Asian Art Museum, the Straus Center for Conservation at Harvard University, and at the MFA. Abby holds an M.A. and C.A.S. in Art Conservation from the State University College at Buffalo (1992). Abby’s significant conservation treatments, technical research and publications at the MFA have focused on Asian and European sculpture.
Η Δρ. Vildan Yarlıgaş εργάζεται στη Διεύθυνση Κεντρικού Εργαστηρίου Αποκατάστασης και Συντήρησης στην Ισταμπούλ από το 2013 ως Συντηρήτρια-Αποκαταστάτρια. Είναι κάτοχος διδακτορικού από το Τεχνικό Πανεπιστήμιο της Ισταμπούλ, MSc από το Τεχνικό Πανεπιστήμιο του Βερολίνου, Τμήμα Συντήρησης Κληρονομιάς και πτυχιούχος από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Ισταμπούλ, Τμήμα Αποκατάστασης και Συντήρησης Αντικειμένων. Κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών της, εργάστηκε σε διάφορες ανασκαφές και έργα αποκατάστασης. Το κύριο πεδίο των ενδιαφερόντων της είναι η ιστορία και η θεωρία της συντήρησης, οι αναστηλώσεις και οι ΜΚΟ στη διατήρηση της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς. Αυτή τη στιγμή είναι πρόεδρος των Ενώσεων Συντηρητών-Αποκαταστατών της Τουρκίας.
Vildan YARLIGAŞ
Directorate of Central Laboratory for Restoration and Conservation, Istanbul, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Turkey
Dr Vildan Yarlıgaş works at the Directorate of Central Laboratory for Restoration and Conservation in Istanbul since 2013 as a Conservator-Restorer. She holds her PhD from Istanbul Technical University, MSc from Berlin Technical University, Heritage Conservation Department and bachelor from Istanbul University, Department of Restoration and Conservation of Artefacts. During her study, she worked at different excavations and restoration projects. Her main field of interests are history and theory of conservation, reconstructions and NGO’s in heritage conservation. She’s currently president of Conservator-Restorers Associations in Turkey.
Η Αγνή Τερλιξή είναι Αναπληρώτρια Προϊσταμένη της Διεύθυνσης Συντήρησης και Αποκατάστασης Έργων Τέχνης στην Εθνική Πινακοθήκη- Μουσείο Αλεξάνδρου Σούτσου (ΕΠΜΑΣ).

Deputy Head of the Directorate of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art, National Gallery- Alexandros Soutsos Museum
Η Μαρία Μερτζάνη είναι κάτοχος BSc (Hons) στην Αρχαιολογική Συντήρηση από το UCL, MSc στην Προστασία Μνημείων από το ΕΜΠ και MSc στη Δημόσια Πολιτική & Δημόσια Διοίκηση από το Οικονομικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (ΟΠΑ). Από το 2014 είναι Προϊσταμένη της Διεύθυνσης Συντήρησης Αρχαίων και Νεωτέρων Μνημείων του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού. Αποστολή της Διεύθυνσης είναι η ανάπτυξη εθνικών στρατηγικών και πολιτικών για τη διατήρηση της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς, καθώς και η υλοποίηση μεγάλης κλίμακας, απαιτητικών έργων συντήρησης. Ενδιαφέρεται ιδιαίτερα για τις πολιτικές συντήρησης και τον στρατηγικό σχεδιασμό.
Maria Mertzani
Head of the Directorate of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments, Hellenic Ministry of Culture
Maria Mertzani holds a BSc (Hons) in Archaeological Conservation from UCL, an MSc in Protection of Monuments, from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and an MSc in Public Policy & Public Management from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). Since 2014 she is the Head of the Directorate of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments at the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. The mission of the Directorate is the development of national strategies and policies for the conservation of cultural heritage, as well as the implementation of large scale, challenging conservation projects. She is particularly interested in conservation policies and strategic planning.
