Ιστορία της συντήρησης της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς
Η Διεύθυνση Συντήρησης Αρχαίων και Νεωτέρων Μνημείων του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού σε συνεργασία με το Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο, διοργάνωσε Διεθνές Επιστημονικό Συνέδριο στις 9 και 10 Οκτωβρίου 2023 με τίτλο: "Ιστορία της συντήρησης της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς: από τα πρώτα επιστημονικά εργαστήρια στα παγκόσμια κέντρα συντήρησης".
Το Συνέδριο πραγματοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο των Ευρωπαϊκών Ημερών Συντήρησης της Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς 2023 και εντάχθηκε στη θεματική ενότητα «Αφιέρωμα σε έναν συντηρητή: αυτοί που διαμόρφωσαν τη Συντήρηση».
Πρόκειται για την υλοποίηση μιας πρωτότυπης ιδέας της Δρ. Γεωργιάννας Μωραΐτου, προϊσταμένης του Τμήματος Συντήρησης, Φυσικών - Χημικών Ερευνών & Αρχαιομετρίας του Εθνικού Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου και του Δρ. Uwe Peltz, συντηρητή στο Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation - National Museums in Berlin.
Η έναρξη του Συνεδρίου πραγματοποιήθηκε τη Δευτέρα 9 Οκτωβρίου στο Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο με το χαιρετισμό της Γενικής Διευθύντριας του, Άννας-Βασιλικής Καραπαναγιώτη, και την κεντρική ομιλία της Προϊσταμένης της Διεύθυνσης Συντήρησης Αρχαίων & Νεωτέρων Μνημείων, Μαρίας Μερτζάνη. Την επομένη 10 Οκτωβρίου διεξήχθη η κυρίως συνάντηση στο αμφιθέατρο «Δημήτριος Παντερμαλής» του Μουσείου της Ακρόπολης.
Στο Συνέδριο, που διεξήχθη στην Αγγλική γλώσσα, συμμετείχαν προσκεκλημένοι εισηγητές-εκπρόσωποι μουσείων, ινστιτούτων και πανεπιστημίων της Ελλάδας και του εξωτερικού. Παρουσιάστηκε η ιστορία των ακόλουθων φορέων: Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο, Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο, Le Louvre, The Metropolitan, Berlin Museums, National Museum of Denmark, Musei Vaticani, Harvard Fog Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Ιstambul, Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique, Instituto Centrale di Restauro, Grand Egyptian Museum.
Το Συνέδριο διαρθρώθηκε σε τέσσερα μέρη: Στο πρώτο μέρος παρουσιάστηκαν τα αποτελέσματα των πρόσφατων ερευνών σχετικά με την πορεία της επιστημονικής Συντήρησης στην Ελλάδα, έτσι όπως αυτή διαφαίνεται μέσα από τη μελέτη των ιστορικών πηγών. Το δεύτερο και το τρίτο μέρος περιλάμβαναν ομιλίες σχετικές με την εξέλιξη της Συντήρησης και τις δραστηριότητες των εργαστηρίων επιστημονικής συντήρησης σε διεθνές επίπεδο. Τέλος, στο τέταρτο μέρος της ημερίδας αναπτύχθηκαν ζητήματα που αφορούσαν τη θεωρία της Συντήρησης σε άμεσο συσχετισμό με τις τρέχουσες εξελίξεις στο πεδίο και με τα μάτια στο «μέλλον του παρελθόντος μας».
Πρόκειται για ένα επιστημονικό γεγονός που για πρώτη φορά διοργανώθηκε στην Ελλάδα με τη δημιουργική συμβολή έγκριτων επιστημόνων και φορέων, σε μια «γιορτή» για τη Συντήρηση της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς.
SCIENTIFIC EVENT
History of Cultural Heritage Conservation
The Directorate of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the National Archaeological Museum, organized an International Scientific Conference on October 9 and 10, 2023 titled: “History of Cultural Heritage Conservation: From the First Scientific Laboratories to the World Conservation Centres”.
The Conference was held in the context of the European Heritage Conservation Days 2023 and was part of the thematic section "Tribute to a conservator: those who shaped Conservation".
It is the implementation of an original idea of Dr. Georgianna Moraitou, head of the Department of Conservation, Physical -Chemical Research & Archaeometry of the National Archaeological Museum at Athens and Dr. Uwe Peltz, conservator at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation - National Museums in Berlin.
The opening of the Conference took place on Monday, October 9 at the National Archaeological Museum with the salutation of its Director General, Dr Anna-Vasiliki Karapanagiotis, and the keynote speech of the Head of the Directorate of Conservation of Ancient & Modern Monuments, Mrs Maria Mertzani.
The next day, October 10, the main Conference was held at the "Dimitrios Pandermalis" amphitheater of the Acropolis Museum. The Conference, conducted in English, was attended by invited lecturers-representatives of museums, institutes and universities in Greece and abroad. The institutions presented were: Athens National Archaeological Museum, Athens Byzantine and Christian Museum, Le Louvre, The Metropolitan, Berlin Museums, National Museum of Denmark, Musei Vaticani, Harvard Fog Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Istanbul Archaeological Museum, Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique, Instituto Centrale di Restauro, Grand Egyptian Museum.
The Conference was structured in four parts: In the first part, the results of recent research on the course of scientific Conservation in Greece, as seen through the study of historical sources, were presented. The second and third part included speeches related to the evolution of Conservation and the activities of scientific conservation laboratories at an international level. Finally, in the fourth part of the conference, issues related to Conservation theory were developed in direct correlation with current developments in the field and with eyes on the "future of our past".
It was a scientific event that was organized for the first time in Greece with the creative contribution of reputable scientists and institutions, in a "celebration" for the Conservation of cultural heritage.

Ο Δρ. Salvador Muñoz Viñas είναι Καθηγητής στο Universitat Politècnica de València και επικεφαλής της ομάδας συντήρησης χαρτιού του Ινστιτούτου Συντήρησης του πανεπιστημίου. Κατά τη διάρκεια της καριέρας του εργάστηκε ως συντηρητής χαρτιού στην Ιστορική Βιβλιοθήκη του Πανεπιστημίου της Βαλένθια, ως επισκέπτης μελετητής στο Straus Center for Conservation του Πανεπιστημίου του Χάρβαρντ και ως διακεκριμένος επισκέπτης καθηγητής στη Συντήρηση του NYU, και έχει δώσει διαλέξεις σε διάφορα πανεπιστήμια και κέντρα, όπως η Εθνική Πινακοθήκη Τέχνης στην Ουάσιγκτον, η Σορβόννη στο Παρίσι, το Βρετανικό Μουσείο στο Λονδίνο ή το ICCROM στη Ρώμη. Το ερευνητικό του έργο περιστρέφεται τόσο γύρω από τη θεωρία της συντήρησης όσο και τις τεχνικές πτυχές της συντήρησης του χαρτιού. Dr. Salvador Muñoz Viñas is a Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de València and head of the paper conservation group of the university’s Conservation Institute. Throughout his career he has worked as a paper conservator in the Historical Library of the University of Valencia, as a visiting scholar in Harvard University’s Straus Center for Conservation, and as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Conservation of the NYU, and has lectured in different universities and centers, such as the National Gallery of Art, in Washington DC, the Sorbonne, in Paris, the British Museum, in London, or ICCROM, in Rome. His research work revolves around both the theory of conservation and the technical aspects of paper conservation. He has published several books on these topics, such as The Technical Analysis of Renaissance Miniature Paintings (Cambridge, MA, 1995, coauthored with Eugene F. Farrell), La restauración del papel (Madrid, 2010) or On the Ethics of Cultural Heritage Conservation (London, 2020). His Contemporary Theory of Conservation (Oxford, 2005) has been translated into Western and non-Western languages and has been said to be “the most ambitious theoretical effort of the last 25 years” (C. Pesme, Studies in Conservation).
Ο Δρ Hussein M. Kamal είναι Γενικός Διευθυντής του Κέντρου Συντήρησης του Μεγάλου Αιγυπτιακού Μουσείου (GEM-CC) από το 2019 έως σήμερα. Ολοκλήρωσε το πτυχίο του στη Συντήρηση το 1988 από το Τμήμα Συντήρησης Αρχαιοτήτων, της Σχολής Αρχαιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου του Καΐρου. Απέκτησε μεταπτυχιακό το 2001 και διδακτορικό το 2010 στη Συντήρηση Αρχαιοτήτων από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Καΐρου. Ο Δρ Kamal έχει εργαστεί στο Υπουργείο Αρχαιοτήτων και Τουρισμού στην Αίγυπτο για 32 χρόνια. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου, κατείχε πολλές διευθυντικές θέσεις: Γενικός Διευθυντής Τεχνικών Υποθέσεων Διατήρησης στο Μεγάλο Αιγυπτιακό Μουσείο (2011 - 2019), Διευθυντής Τεκμηρίωσης και Επιστημονικής Έρευνας (2007 - 2011), Διευθυντής Αρχαιολογικής Περιοχής Ain Shams (2003 - 2007), Διευθυντής Πλινθόκτιστων Αρχαιολογικών Κτιρίων (1999 - 2003) και Συντηρητής Αρχαιοτήτων (1990 - 1999). Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της περιόδου, ο Δρ Kamal έχει γίνει ειδικός στη διαχείριση εκθέσεων, την επανορθωτική και προληπτική συντήρηση καθώς και την επιστήμη της συντήρησης. Συμμετείχε και οργάνωσε πολλά εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα και υποτροφίες στην Ιαπωνία, την Ιορδανία, την Ιταλία κ.λ.π. Δίδαξε σε πολλά πανεπιστήμια, δημοσίευσε εκτενώς σε διάφορες πτυχές της συντήρησης και παρουσίασε πολλά θέματα σε διεθνή συνέδρια και συναντήσεις. Έχει ηγηθεί σειράς εθνικών και διεθνών έργων, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του τρέχοντος JICA-GEM Joint Conservation Project (GEM-JC).
Hussein Mohamed KAMAL
Grand Egyptian Museum Conservation Center (GEM-CC)
Dr. Hussein M. Kamal is currently General Director of the Grand Egyptian Museum - Conservation Center, Egypt (2019 - present). He completed his degree in Conservation in 1988 from the Department of Conservation of Antiquities, Faculty of Archaeology, and Cairo University. He obtained his MA in 2001 and Ph.D. in 2010 in Conservation of Antiquities from Cairo University. Dr. Kamal has worked for the Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism in Egypt for 32 years. During that time, he held several managerial positions: General Director of Conservation Technical Affairs at the Grand Egyptian Museum (2011 - 2019), Manager of Documentation and Scientific Research (2007 - 2011), Manager of Ain Shams Archaeological Area (2003 - 2007), Manager of Archaeological Mud Brick Buildings (1999 - 2003), and Archaeological Conservator (1990 - 1999). During this period, Dr. Kamal has become an expert in exhibition management, remedial conservation, preventive conservation, and conservation science. He participated in and organized several training programs and scholarships in Japan, Jordan, Italy, etc. He lectured in many universities, published extensively in different conservation aspects and presented lots of issues in international conferences and congresses. He has been leading a number of national and international projects, including the current JICA-GEM Joint Conservation Project (GEM-JC).
Η Μαρία Μερτζάνη είναι κάτοχος BSc (Hons) στην Αρχαιολογική Συντήρηση από το UCL, MSc στην Προστασία Μνημείων από το ΕΜΠ και MSc στη Δημόσια Πολιτική & Δημόσια Διοίκηση από το Οικονομικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (ΟΠΑ). Από το 2014 είναι Προϊσταμένη της Διεύθυνσης Συντήρησης Αρχαίων και Νεωτέρων Μνημείων του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού. Αποστολή της Διεύθυνσης είναι η ανάπτυξη εθνικών στρατηγικών και πολιτικών για τη διατήρηση της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς, καθώς και η υλοποίηση μεγάλης κλίμακας, απαιτητικών έργων συντήρησης. Ενδιαφέρεται ιδιαίτερα για τις πολιτικές συντήρησης και τον στρατηγικό σχεδιασμό.
Maria Mertzani
Head of the Directorate of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments, Hellenic Ministry of Culture
Maria Mertzani holds a BSc (Hons) in Archaeological Conservation from UCL, an MSc in Protection of Monuments, from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and an MSc in Public Policy & Public Management from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB). Since 2014 she is the Head of the Directorate of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments at the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. The mission of the Directorate is the development of national strategies and policies for the conservation of cultural heritage, as well as the implementation of large scale, challenging conservation projects. She is particularly interested in conservation policies and strategic planning.
